Here you will find a description and examples of the six different types of simple machines.
The Inquiry Almanac is another site that will help to find the names and descriptions of the different types of simple machines.
This website explains how each machine works.
Play Leonardo's Mysterious Machinery and try to identify the simple machines he used.
This website is the United States Patent and Trademark Office's web pages for kids. You can find out information pertaining
to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. You can also find interesting information and have a little fun while
you are at it.
An interesting website that shows examples of what real kids have invented. This site also gives some information regarding
patents.

Rube Goldberg's Gallery will give you some cartoons and descriptions of some of his inventions.
Welcome to Rube Goldberg's official website!

Process
Your process is as follows: 1.First and foremost
you are in charge of keeping track of when things are due and what is due.
2. Research the type of cartoons that Rube
Goldberg makes and begin to think of a machine that could help Rube regain his sense of creativity. Draw a cartoon of the
machine your group is planning on making.
3.Research the six types of simple machines: pulley, screw, wheel and axel,
lever, inclined plane, and wedge. Use the machine worksheet.
4.Research how a person goes about getting a patent.
Fill out the patent research.
5. Make a Rube Goldberg cartoon.
6. Begin making the complex machine. 7. Put together a presentation for the
patent review board (your classmates).
8.Present
your patent to the patent review board (your classmates).
If you finish something early think of the following things:
Did I do my best? Did I include everything that was required? Did I have a group member edit my work?

Evaluation
Your group will be evaluated on how well you complete
this task. Your group will need to turn in the following: -A list of simple machines and how they work. -A patent
application. -A completed complex machine. -A Rube Goldberg cartoon.
Points will be given based on the following: -How
complete is your simple machine list? -Did you construct your invention in the Rube Goldberg style? -How well did
you follow directions? -Did you use at least 3 simple machines? -Did you accurately label all the simple machines
in your invention cartoon?
Use your rubric to help you answer the questions above.

Conclusion
At the end of this WebQuest you will have learned what the six simple machines are and how they are used. You have learned
about a new way to make your life easier by creating a new machine. You will know who Rube Goldberg was and how he used simple
machines to invent new machines. You will know how the patent process works and why it is necessary.
In conclusion I want you to think about the following questions:
How do you think early man developed the pulley?
How many simple machines remind you of an inclined plane?
Think of a machine in real life that uses all of the simple machines that you learned about.
